Lawyer Caro Rattray (Michelle Gomez) is introduced at the crime scene as a companion who "would relish a small adventure". She is initially sickened at the sight of the body and blood but admits the murder nonetheless holds a fascination for her. Later she calls Rebus to offer information on a Latin motto left at the murder scene and it quickly becomes clear that the forthright and flirtatious Caro is more interested in Rebus.
Although scheduled for broadcast on 20th September 2001, this episode was cancelled due to sensitivity following the World Trade Centre attacks on 11th September and was not shown until 1st November 2004.
